# Where Is The Wall

> An independent, source-linked atlas of where the Berlin Wall went after 1989: 381 researched sites — surviving sections, relocated segments, fragments, memorials and artworks — in 295 places across 60 countries. Published by Berlin Experiences.

How to read and cite it:

- Every site has one page, and the page carries the sources it was written from, listed with what each source supports. Cite the page and, for any specific claim, the source it names.
- Every site carries an evidence level saying what it rests on: Listed (inventory listings and general references only), Documented (an institutional source or a press report), Corroborated (an institutional source, an independent second source and a checked position) or Confirmed (the holder's confirmation or a recorded site visit). Publication means a site was researched and sourced, not that anyone has confirmed the object is still standing; only Confirmed says that. Say so when it matters.
- The 381 sites rest on 510 published listings: 466 from the two source inventories and 44 created by the atlas's own research, for places the inventories missed. Where the two inventories list the same place, the atlas serves one page and names both listings on it; the other listing's address redirects there. A site may hold several segments, so counts of sites are not counts of physical pieces of Wall.
- 120 further listings are held unpublished until they are researched; the atlas does not describe them.
- Where sources disagree the page says so and keeps both readings rather than choosing one.

## Stories

- [Border Wall or Hinterland Wall? The Berlin Wall Was Two Walls](https://whereisthewall.com/stories/border-wall-or-hinterland-wall): The most photographed Berlin Wall in the world faced east, not west. Knowing which wall you are looking at changes what a surviving segment means.
- [How to Tell a Real Piece of the Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/stories/how-to-tell-a-real-piece-of-the-berlin-wall): Most fragments sold as Berlin Wall are concrete of uncertain origin carrying paint applied long after 1989. The arithmetic explains why, and three questions sort them out.
- [The Mauerspechte: Who Actually Broke Up the Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/stories/mauerspechte-who-broke-up-the-berlin-wall): The wall woodpeckers are remembered as a charming footnote. They were also the largest uncontrolled demolition in postwar Europe, and they destroyed most of the evidence.
- [Where Did the Berlin Wall Go?](https://whereisthewall.com/stories/where-did-the-berlin-wall-go): The Wall did not simply vanish in 1989. It was sold, given away and crushed for road aggregate — and pieces of it now stand in at least 62 countries.
- [Who Painted the Berlin Wall?](https://whereisthewall.com/stories/who-painted-the-berlin-wall): Thierry Noir, Kiddy Citny, Indiano and Kani Alavi painted the surfaces the world remembers — and then watched their work sold at auction without them.

## Collections

- [Berlin Wall pieces painted by Thierry Noir](https://whereisthewall.com/artists/thierry-noir): Segments carrying work by Thierry Noir, who painted the west face of the Wall from 1984 and has gone on painting pieces of it, for whoever asked, since it fell.
- [Berlin Wall pieces painted by Kiddy Citny](https://whereisthewall.com/artists/kiddy-citny): Segments carrying Kiddy Citny's crowned hearts and king's heads, painted on Waldemarstraße in 1984 and 1985 and now scattered across three continents.
- [Berlin Wall pieces painted by Jürgen Große (Indiano)](https://whereisthewall.com/artists/jurgen-grosse-indiano): Four sites holding the Global Messages that Jürgen Große, signing himself Indiano, painted on the Wall in 1990 as the demolition crews worked along it.
- [Berlin Wall pieces in works by Ben Wagin](https://whereisthewall.com/artists/ben-wagin): Two memorials by the Berlin artist Ben Wagin: the Parliament of Trees on the former border strip, and the only wall element in public space in Bonn.
- [Berlin Wall pieces in sculptures by Edwina Sandys](https://whereisthewall.com/artists/edwina-sandys): Breakthrough at Fulton and BreakFree at Hyde Park: one sculpture cut from eight segments, and a second made from the figures cut out of it.
- [Berlin Wall pieces at US presidential libraries](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/us-presidential-libraries): Seven presidential libraries hold a piece of the Wall, and each reads it through its own president's part: Helsinki, détente, Berlin in 1963, or 1989 itself.
- [Berlin Wall pieces on military bases and in military museums](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/military-bases-and-museums): Segments kept by the forces that stood on the other side of the Wall: army posts, air bases, NATO commands and the museums of war on both sides of the Atlantic.
- [Berlin Wall pieces at embassies, foreign ministries and international institutions](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/embassies-and-international-institutions): Segments on diplomatic ground: German embassies, foreign ministries, the United Nations, the European Parliament, NATO and the European Court of Human Rights.
- [Berlin Wall pieces at schools and universities](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/schools-and-universities): Campuses and schoolyards from Massachusetts to Singapore, where the object is there to be explained to people who were born after it fell.
- [Berlin Wall pieces at churches and places of worship](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/churches-and-places-of-worship): Sanctuaries, temples and parish churches where the Wall is read devotionally: as prophecy fulfilled, as scripture, or as a prayer for another divided country.
- [Berlin Wall pieces that moved, closed or disappeared](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/lost-and-moved): Segments that have left the place they were first recorded: into storage, into another building, across a city, or out of sight when their venue closed.
- [Berlin Wall pieces sold at the Monaco auction of June 1990](https://whereisthewall.com/collections/monaco-auction-1990): Where lots from the 1990 sale that opened the trade in the Wall ended up: a Swiss suburb, a cognac estate, a cement works, a Silesian meadow and the Vatican.

## Sites

- [Berlin Wall segment in Aachen, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/aachen/aachen-nw-a2): Parts of the Wall outside the Johanniter building at Rotter Bruch, in Germany's westernmost city.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Ahrweiler, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/ahrweiler/ahrweiler-rp-a4): Given by the refugees themselves: East Germans who arrived from the Prague embassy on 5 October 1989 later sent the district a piece of the Wall in thanks.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Alsfeld, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/alsfeld/alsfeld-he-a7): A wall element at a street address in a Hessian market town, photographed but otherwise undocumented.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Ansbach, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/ansbach/ansbach-by-a14): An original segment unveiled on the square An der Riviera on 3 October 1990, where the city has held its Unity Day ceremony ever since.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Aschaffenburg, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/aschaffenburg/aschaffenburg-by-a19): A segment the Museum am Checkpoint Charlie gave the painter Siegfried Rischar in 1991, painted with a rose in 2009 and given to the city by his children in 2017.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Bad Salzgitter, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/bad-salzgitter/bad-salzgitter-ni-a26): A segment from the Spreebogen, bought at auction by the city and unveiled on 9 November 2009 outside the building where West Germany kept its register of crimes committed by the East German state.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Ballrechten-Dottingen, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/ballrechten-dottingen/ballrechten-dottingen-bw-a27): Parts of the Wall from the Berliner Sonnenallee, standing on a village street in the Markgräflerland.
- [AlliiertenMuseum, Clayallee, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-allied-museum): Four segments and a watchtower on Clayallee, beside the last genuine Checkpoint Charlie guardhouse — the one the replica downtown stands in for.
- [Berlin Wall Memorial, Bernauer Straße](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-memorial-bernauer-strasse): The only place where the border strip survives in depth — wall, ground, obstacles and tower positions in one preserved cross-section.
- [Berlin Wall segments, Potsdamer Platz](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-potsdamer-platz): A short row of elements by the station, on the square that supplied a great many of the segments in this atlas.
- [Berlin Wall, Liesenstraße and Invalidenfriedhof](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-liesenstrasse): Wall through an eighteenth-century military cemetery, where graves were cleared for the death strip and the gravestones were used to pave a street.
- [Berlin Wall, Niederkirchnerstraße](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-niederkirchnerstrasse): About 200 m of border wall left rough and chewed by the Mauerspechte — and the clearest description anywhere of what the object in this catalogue actually is.
- [Berliner Mauerweg, the former border route](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-mauerweg): The 160 km signed route along the whole former border — a record with no pin, because the object is a line rather than a place.
- [Bösebrücke and Platz des 9. November 1989, Bornholmer Straße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-bornholmer-strasse): The place the Wall actually opened: the first barrier raised on 9 November 1989, with a section of the hinterland wall and the guard tower's foundation left standing.
- [Checkpoint Charlie, Friedrichstraße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-checkpoint-charlie): The most visited Cold War address in Berlin, where nothing original survives in place — the genuine guardhouse is seven kilometres away.
- [East Side Gallery, Mühlenstraße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-east-side-gallery): The longest surviving run at 1.3 km — and the inner wall, built to the outer wall's specification because state visitors drove past it.
- [George Wyllie's Berlin Burd, Wilhelmsruher Damm — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-wilhelmsruh-berlin-burd): A five-metre steel bird a Scottish artist put up in December 1988 to look over the Wall into the East, still standing beside a single segment in Reinickendorf.
- [Günter Litfin Memorial, Kieler Straße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-guenter-litfin-memorial): A surviving GDR command tower on the Spandau ship canal, for one of the first people shot at the border.
- [Hinterland wall at Rudower Höhe, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-rudower-hoehe): 450 metres of third-generation inner wall at the southern edge of the city, losing segments to the motorway and to whoever takes them.
- [Hinterland wall at the Schillingbrücke, Stralauer Platz, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-schillingbruecke): Where the border ran through the river: the whole width of the Spree was East Berlin, secured with patrol boats and nail-studded underwater mats.
- [Hinterland wall, Leipziger Platz and Stresemannstraße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-leipziger-platz): The inner wall built to look like the outer one, because the GDR wanted the view from the Western viewing platforms to look tidy.
- [Hinterland wall, Mauerpark and Schwedter Straße, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-mauerpark): Hinterland wall built high and unusually smooth because a football crowd gathered beside it — now a park and a legal graffiti surface repainted continuously.
- [Marienfelde Refugee Centre Museum, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-marienfelde-refugee-centre): The 1953 reception centre where 1.35 million people arrived from the East, with a wall element and plaque outside on Marienfelder Allee.
- [Mauerelement am Rathaus Treptow, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-rathaus-treptow): An element at the town hall of the borough whose western edge was the border for thirty years.
- [Mauerelement vor dem Museum Treptow, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-museum-treptow): A Grenzmauer 75 element with a graffito outside the district museum, in the borough the border ran through twice.
- [Mauerelement, John F. Kennedy School, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-jfk-school): A painted element outside the German-American school named for the president who said he was a Berliner — and the last of three sites the catalogue's old generic Berlin row was pointing at.
- [Mauerelemente, Europa-Center, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-europa-center): Two painted elements in a display case in a shopping centre entrance — the Wall as a fixture of West Berlin's commercial heart.
- [Mauerelemente, Militärhistorisches Museum Flugplatz Gatow, Berlin](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-gatow-airfield): Two elements outside Hangar 3 at the airfield where the British garrison was handed its own piece of the Wall before leaving Berlin in 1994.
- [Panorama observation tower, Erna-Berger-Straße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-erna-berger-tower): The last mushroom-shaped panorama tower in Berlin, abandoned by the border troops because its shaft was too narrow to get out of quickly.
- [Parliament of Trees, Schiffbauerdamm, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-parliament-of-trees): Ben Wagin's living memorial of 1990, with original wall elements set among trees on the old border line by the Spree.
- [Schlesischer Busch command post, Puschkinallee, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-schlesischer-busch): A command post that ran eighteen watchtowers, saved by an art museum before the border regime was even wound up, and restored in 2004 to look its age rather than new.
- [Seven wall segments, Märkisches Museum, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-maerkisches-museum): Seven original segments outside the city museum, two with Kiddy Citny's king's heads from the Waldemarstraße frieze and one with a door the border troops used.
- [Statue of Liberty by Elmgreen & Dragset, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-hamburger-bahnhof-statue-of-liberty): An original wall segment with a cash machine set into it, by Elmgreen & Dragset, in the courtyard of Berlin's national museum of contemporary art.

- [Wall element, courtyard of the Mitte Museum, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-mitte-museum): An element brought straight from the planned crossing at Bernauer Straße in May 1990 to the courtyard of the Wedding local history museum.
- [Wall monuments along the Ulbricht curve, Norweger Straße and Behmstraße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-ulbricht-curve): A railway wall from 1900 that was absorbed into the border in 1961, and a curved slab wall built to protect a railway line the Wall itself had made necessary.
- [Wall remains around the Nordbahnhof, Gartenstraße, Berlin — Berlin Wall](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/berlin/berlin-nordbahnhof): A ghost station whose trains never stopped, and 900 metres of a brick station wall from 1895 that the GDR bricked up and topped with barbed wire.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Bernau, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/bernau/bernau-bb-a32): Three segments set up on 2 November 2009 outside the district administration's Bernau office, one of them painted by Thierry Noir for the tenth anniversary of the fall of the Wall.
- [Berlin Wall segment in Bocholt, Germany](https://whereisthewall.com/wall/germany/bocholt/bocholt-nw-a38): Two segments that two Bocholt residents fetched from Berlin and set down in front of the town hall in 1995; the city accepted them and marked them with an information sign in 2014.
