The record
Two four-tonne panels on loan from Singapore's foreign ministry, given by a German building-materials firm for fifty years of relations.
Two panels stand in a garden behind Tembusu College at NUS University Town, unveiled on 18 October 2016 by Singapore's foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan, the German ambassador Michael Witter and Tommy Koh, the college's rector. Each weighs about four tonnes and measures 3.6 m high, 1.2 m across and 27 cm thick, on a base 2.1 m wide. That thickness is the most precise structural figure anywhere in this catalogue, and it is worth having: a Grenzmauer 75 element is not a wall in the domestic sense but a pre-cast L-shaped slab about the depth of a paving kerb, which is why two men with a crane could load one onto a ship.
How did it get here?
A gift to Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Elmar Prost and his building-materials company Lagerhaus KW GmbH, marking fifty years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Singapore. Loaned by the ministry to the university for at least five years.
