A segment outside the underground air-defence bunker Western Europe built in the 1950s, now a Cold War museum.
A segment stands outside the command bunker dug into the southern flank of the Kemmelberg between 1952 and 1956, when Belgium, France, Britain, Luxembourg and the Netherlands built a coordination post for Western European air defence under the Brussels Pact. From 1963 the Belgian armed forces kept it as a wartime headquarters; it was abandoned in 1995 and opened as a Cold War museum in 2010. The pairing is exact in a way few records here manage: the object that divided the continent, standing on top of the hole the other side dug in case it went wrong.
