A section stands near one entrance to the park of the National Palace of Culture, behind a small Bulgarian Orthodox chapel and a memorial to the victims of the communist regime whose plaque carries some ten thousand names. The palace itself was opened in 1981 by the regime the memorial commemorates, which makes the park an unusually compressed piece of ground: the state's own monument to itself, a list of its dead, and a fragment of someone else's border, within a few metres of each other.
