An original element has stood on the grounds of a window and door factory in Kuopio since 1990. Its exact position is not published here, for the reason the Foundation gives: the company does not want visitors. That is not the same as a secret — Finland's public broadcaster YLE reported on the piece for the twenty-fifth anniversary in 2014, and a technical manager explained on the record how it got there.
The firm's former managing director was serving as honorary consul in Berlin in November 1989 when he was offered the element, and took it. Finland's own history with its eastern neighbour is the reason the offer landed: a country that had fought the Soviet Union and then spent the Cold War managing its proximity did not need the object explained.
