Lot 81, the last piece in the Monaco catalogue, bought by a cognac heiress — and repainted years later by the artist, on camera, because the weather had ruined it.
At the Monaco auction of 1990, Ljiljana Hennessy bought the last piece listed in the catalogue. The former actress and heiress of the Hennessy cognac house took lot 81: a fragment 1.85 metres high from Waldemarstraße, carrying certificate number 263. The catalogue attributed the red heart on it to Thierry Noir, which is wrong — it is a Kiddy Citny.
The mistake was corrected in the most direct way available. In a 2009 documentary by Elke Sasse and Stefan Pannen, funded by the Federal Foundation and titled with the same question this atlas asks, Citny is filmed at the Hennessy estate near Cognac renewing his own painting. The segment had spent time outdoors and wind and rain had worn the picture badly; it is now back in the tea house on the estate.
Hennessy says in the film that the fall of the Wall and the end of communist rule in central and eastern Europe meant something personal to her: in Yugoslavia, where she came from, much of life was governed by a comparable unfreedom until 1990.
