The record

A four-tonne section from the Brandenburg Gate stretch, given to the town by a Berlin businessman and set up beside the Normaluhr on Berliner Straße in November 2009.

The section stands on a low plinth beside the Normaluhr on Berliner Straße, at the edge of the Holland and not far from the last surviving piece of Herford's own medieval town wall. The Neue Westfälische reported it being craned onto its base on 4 November 2009: a piece of concrete about a metre wide, three metres high and around four tonnes, from the stretch at the Brandenburg Gate, still carrying paint from the days after 9 November 1989. It was handed over to the public that Saturday, 7 November, in front of about fifty people. The donor was Peter Koch, a Berlin businessman who runs a light-metal foundry there and had built several housing estates in Herford, with his wife Evelin. The mayor, Bruno Wollbrink, acknowledged at the handover that the site had been argued over.

Whether the street name was the reason for choosing it, the reports do not say. It is the same pairing that Madrid, Seoul and Guatemala City arranged deliberately — a piece of the Wall on a street that carries Berlin's name.

This record has no pin: the listing came without coordinates, and no checked coordinate for the Normaluhr on Berliner Straße was found.

How did it get here?

A gift to the city of Herford from the Berlin businessman Peter Koch and his wife Evelin, set on its plinth on 4 November 2009 and handed over on 7 November; reported as having stood at the Brandenburg Gate.
