A single wall element with coloured graffiti stands at the Villa Schöningen on the Schwanenallee, at the Potsdam end of the Glienicke Bridge. The Berlin Wall Foundation records it in MAUERSPUREN, its directory of surviving traces of the border, as MAU-704, photographed in 2018 and dated to the Grenzmauer 75 generation built from the mid-1970s.
The setting is one of the most concentrated pieces of Cold War geography anywhere. The bridge in front of the villa was the crossing where the superpowers exchanged captured agents; the sector boundary ran down the middle of it; and the villa itself, built by Ludwig Persius between 1843 and 1845, served as a children's home in GDR times before reopening as a private museum of the Cold War and a venue for art exhibitions.
This record is also a lesson in how not to rule a listing out. It was set aside earlier on the grounds that the Chronik der Mauer entry for the villa does not mention a wall element and the museum's own website now presents the building purely as an art space. Both of those remain true, and neither is evidence of absence. The institution that catalogues the remains of the Wall has it on the list.
