A segment stands on Andrássy út in front of the House of Terror, the museum in the building used successively by the Hungarian fascist and communist security services. It was erected on 11 November 2011, the twenty-second anniversary of the opening, in the presence of Hungarian and German politicians. It stands near a monument to the Iron Curtain made largely of rusted chain — two borders, two materials, one argument.
How did it get here?
A donation from the Hohenschönhausen memorial, the former Stasi remand prison in Berlin. One memorial institution giving to another is a distinct provenance pattern from the Senate gift stock that supplied most diplomatic recipients.
