Four segments in Teguh Ostenrik's Transcending Limits, bought in Berlin in 1990 and installed in 2017 after waiting twenty-seven years for a site.
Four segments installed on 3 October 2017, German Unity Day, as part of Patung Menembus Batas — Transcending Limits — by the Indonesian artist Teguh Ostenrik. Cut metal figures stumble towards the panels, slip between them and climb over them. Kalijodo was a red-light district cleared in 2016, and the park was built on top of it.
How did it get here?
Ostenrik had lived near the Wall for more than ten years. He returned to Indonesia in 1988; when the border opened he went back to Berlin, bought the pieces and shipped them home with help from the Jakarta administration in 1990. They then waited twenty-seven years for a site.
