The record

A fragment set into a memorial to the 1991 barricades, standing in front of the former Communist Party Central Committee building.

A fragment is built into a monument on the northern edge of Kronvalda Park, in front of the former Communist Party Central Committee building. The monument commemorates the barricades of January 1991, when Latvians built barricades in central Riga against Soviet interior ministry troops; the Berlin fragment was added to it in 1992. The address does the work: a piece of the German border standing outside the building from which the Latvian party ran the republic.

How did it get here?

A gift to the city from the governing mayor of Berlin, added to the existing barricades monument in 1992.
