A single concrete slab standing in a village of a few hundred people, one of three given to a Polish county by its German twin district in 2009.
At the end of March 2009 three wall monuments left the German district of Oberhavel for its Polish partner county of Biała Podlaska. One slab was set up in the commune of Międzyrzec Podlaski and one here in Kobylany, a village in the gmina of Terespol; the third followed in Terespol itself in August, unveiled in the presence of Lech Wałęsa.
Kobylany is the smallest of the three settings and the one that shows what the gift was for. The stated purpose was a sign of a division overcome and a memorial to peaceful coexistence between peoples — the kind of formula that reads as boilerplate until you notice where it was placed. This is not a capital or a museum. It is a village near the eastern edge of the European Union, and the segment was put there deliberately rather than where the most people would see it.
The concrete comes from the stretch of Wall that separated the Oberhavel municipality of Glienicke from the Berlin district of Reinickendorf: the outer ring, not the inner-city border that appears in the photographs.
