A Potsdamer Platz segment standing at the last station before North Korea, between a panel marking a division that ended and a clock counting one that has not.
A segment left Berlin on 22 July 2015 for one of the most pointed destinations in this catalogue. It was among the last of the thirty-five segments that Sony transferred to the Land of Berlin in 2005 for non-commercial use, and the Berlin Senate sent it to South Korea, to the Platform of Reunification at Dorasan station — the northernmost point of the South Korean rail network, on the border with the North.
It was inaugurated on 14 October 2015 by the German president Joachim Gauck, the South Korean unification minister Hong Yong-pyo and the president of the railway company KORAIL, Choi Yeon-hye. Gauck and Hong unveiled a copper plate carrying appeals from both heads of state: from President Park Geun-hye, create a reunified Korea and help the world become more peaceful; from Gauck, together for a life in freedom. Choi produced a map with a rail line that might one day run from Korea to Berlin, and said that Gauck's visit to one of the few countries still divided would give Koreans hope.
What makes the installation work is what stands either side of it. On the left a panel records that the German division ended on 3 October 1990. On the right a clock counts the Korean one, which has not.
How did it get here?
One of thirty-five segments transferred by Sony to the Land of Berlin in 2005 for non-commercial use, sent to South Korea by the Berlin Senate in July 2015.
