Bought at a German auction in 2005 for 7,000 euros and taken to Ibiza by a father who wanted his Spanish-raised children to see the thing itself.
A segment from Waldemarstraße in West Berlin, painted with a Kiddy Citny graffito, reached the Balearic island of Ibiza in 2005. It belongs to Olaf Stölt, who paid 7,000 euros for it at an auction in Germany.
Its route there is a small record of the trade's failures. The slab was taken down in the spring of 1990 on the orders of the GDR government and passed to Limex and to the LeLé agency to be sold at a profit; no buyer was found. It sat, with three others from the same stock, until the lot was put up to the highest bidder fifteen years later.
Stölt has explained plainly why he bought it. He wanted to bring recent German history closer to children who were mostly born and raised in Spain, and to have visible proof of it — not only of the post-war division, but of what caused it, since the Wall was in the end a consequence of the Hitler dictatorship. He also describes the reaction it gets, which is the most useful line in the record: people who hear that someone brought the Berlin Wall to Ibiza picture a lump broken out of it, not a whole element, and the first thing they say when they see it is that they had not understood how big it is. Each time, he says, a conversation about German history follows.
