An original segment painted by Thierry Noir stands at the entrance of the Wende Museum in Culver City. Justinian Jampol, the museum's founder and director, bought it in 2006 and had Noir paint it; when the museum moved in 2017 from Buckingham Parkway into a former National Guard armory, the segment was permanently installed at the corner of Culver Boulevard and Coombs Avenue, in 2019.
Jampol had the idea of exhibiting East German history in the United States during a period of study in Germany in the 1990s. The museum opened in the summer of 2002 and its collection now runs to more than a hundred thousand objects of everyday life and politics in the GDR — the largest such collection outside Germany, assembled while the material was still being thrown away.
The museum is also why Los Angeles holds the longest stretch of the Wall standing anywhere outside Berlin. Ten further segments came into the collection for the twentieth anniversary in 2009 and were installed on Wilshire Boulevard, where this catalogue records them separately.
