Three sections stand near Smith Lake, about 400 feet from the Buffalo Soldier Monument. They are set at deliberately different angles, and the memorial's design concept names each one: “The Berlin Wall begins to crumble”, “The Berlin Wall falls” and “Democracy remains”. Most installations in this catalogue set segments upright as they stood; this is one of the few that uses the arrangement itself to tell a story, and it is the only one that stages collapse.
How did it get here?
The three sections came from near Checkpoint Charlie and were donated to the post because of the worldwide reach of the US Army Command and General Staff College, which trains officers from allied armies.
