Fragment 124, secured by a professor who wrote to the mayor of Berlin to mark the city's twinning with Los Angeles.
Fragment number 124 stands on the Bluff between the Foley Building and the Malone Student Center, unveiled on 8 May 1997. Los Angeles holds more documented sites than any other city outside Berlin — the Wende Museum's run on Wilshire Boulevard, the museum itself, this campus fragment and several private holdings — and this is the one that came about because an individual asked.
How did it get here?
In 1996 Dirk Verheyen, a political scientist then teaching at the university, wrote to the governing mayor of Berlin, Eberhard Diepgen, asking for a segment to mark the twinning of Berlin and Los Angeles. It was unveiled the following year.
