In 2017 the Hach Company, which makes instruments for analysing water, installed a segment of the Berlin Wall in front of the main entrance of its North American headquarters at Loveland in Colorado.
It is half of a pair. In 1993 Reinhard Lange, whose company merged with Hach in 2004, bought two segments to keep the memory of the division of Germany and Berlin alive, and for years they stood together on the site of the Dr. Bruno Lange GmbH in Berlin-Zehlendorf. When the Berlin staff wanted to keep the memory of that firm and its address alive in turn, they put one of the two on a ship to Colorado; it was installed in Loveland in August 2017, and the delivery was filmed.
The result is a small and deliberate piece of symbolism, and unusually for this catalogue it is about the company rather than the country: two elements that once stood side by side in Berlin now stand seven thousand kilometres apart, one at each end of the same firm.
