An Indiano segment in a vitrine on a hill at a Pennsylvania luxury resort, passed from Lord Palumbo to a local businessman.
On one of the hills of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, in the woods of south-western Pennsylvania, an original segment stands inside a glass case. When and in what circumstances it arrived could not be established.
The painting is by Jürgen Große, who signs himself Indiano, and was made on the Wall in 1990: *Change myself* and *Wake up* are parts of his Global Messages, the series he put on a number of segments. The 2.6-tonne piece came to Nemacolin as a gift from the Pennsylvania businessman Joseph Hardy, who had it in turn from Lord Peter Palumbo — one of six that Palumbo bought in London in 1994. A plaque beside it offers this as proof that freedom will prevail where people of courage and conviction press for it.
Palumbo's purchase accounts for several of this catalogue's records, and two of them make an instructive pair: the Yorkshire Sculpture Park segment, from the same six, stands in the open air with its Indiano painting almost entirely washed away, while this one has been kept behind glass and can still be read.
