Flown to Virginia by the German air force in 1991 for the opening of the Bundeswehr's American headquarters, from Waldemarstraße with Thierry Noir still faintly on it.
A segment 3.20 metres high stands in front of the building of the German Armed Forces Command in Reston, Virginia, the Bundeswehr's representation in the United States. The Luftwaffe brought it over in 1991 and it was dedicated at the opening of the new offices.
The commander, General Gero Schachthöfer, has described what it is for in two directions at once: for the soldiers and civilian staff who work in the building it is a daily warning and memorial, and for American visitors it stands for the Cold War, for the overcoming of the division of Germany and Europe, and for a piece of history that many of them personally helped to shape. A small English plaque at the foot records that the division of Berlin ended in November 1989 and dedicates the segment to the spirit of German-American friendship.
It came from Waldemarstraße in Kreuzberg and still carries traces of Thierry Noir's painting — the same street that produced the Citny hearts now split between New Jersey, North Carolina and Basel, the Ibiza segment, the Hennessy fragment at Jarnac and the five in storage in Connecticut. No other address in Berlin has scattered so widely.
The record was left as a bare listing until now because no institutional source could be found for it and the office keeps little public presence. The Federal Foundation's entry supplies one.
