The monument Muren 89 was unveiled on the central Holtets Plads for the fifteenth anniversary of the opening. It is a six-armed fountain with a reddish granite stele at the end of it, and the silhouette of a dove cut clean out of the middle: the bird flies through the wall into freedom, and the water running everywhere it can makes the same argument in a second material.
The siting is the sharpest thing about it. The statue beside it is Frederik VII, who signed Denmark's first constitution on 9 November 1849 — the same date, a hundred and forty years earlier, as the night the border opened. Two ninths of November, one square.
Wie kam es hierher?
Designed by the Danish stonemason Hother Nielsen, who had made the model in 1991; the mayor saw it in Nielsen's studio and the town council backed building it in 2004.
