Photographs wanted

99 of 381 sites have a photograph. 282 do not, and for many of them no freely licensed photograph exists anywhere. If you live near one, or pass one, you can close that gap.

How it works

1. Take the photograph yourself. Only your own picture can be licensed by you. Photographs found online, or taken by someone else, cannot be added.
2. Choose a free licence. Wikimedia Commons accepts only free licences, and the atlas accepts CC BY-SA 4.0, CC BY 4.0, CC0. A free licence lets anyone reuse the photograph, including commercially, provided they credit you (CC0 asks for nothing). You keep the copyright.
3. Upload it on Wikimedia Commons. The links below open Commons’ upload form with the description, the place and a category already filled in. You need a free Commons account, which you can create there. Nothing is uploaded to this site.
4. We find it and check it. The atlas looks for new Commons uploads of these places, checks the licence, the author and that the photograph shows this piece and not another in the same city, then adds it to the record. Nothing is published automatically, and it can take weeks.
5. You are credited by name. The photograph appears with your name as it is on Commons, the licence and a link back to the file.

Painted pieces need care. Many segments carry paint by a named artist. In countries without freedom of panorama for artworks, such as the United States and France, the painter’s copyright can reach a photograph of their work, and Commons deletes such photographs on request. A photograph that shows the setting, the plaque or an unpainted face is always safe. Where this applies, the list says so.
