Two elements outside Hangar 3 at the airfield where the British garrison was handed its own piece of the Wall before leaving Berlin in 1994.
Two wall elements stand in front of Hangar 3, in the open-air part of the Bundeswehr's military history museum at the former airfield of Gatow, on the western edge of Berlin. The Berlin Wall Foundation catalogues them as MAU-740, photographed in 2022.
Gatow matters to this catalogue for something that left rather than something that stayed. It was the Royal Air Force's airfield in the British sector, and before the British garrison withdrew from Berlin in September 1994, after forty-nine years, a wall segment was handed over to them here. That piece went to the Royal Air Force Museum in England, where it is now built into a reconstructed border scene at Cosford and recorded separately in this atlas.
So the two elements at Gatow stand on the ground from which one of the catalogue's British records departed. The airfield itself changed hands rather than closing: the RAF left, and the site became a German museum of military history.
