Berlin is where the Wall was and where least of it is. The border ran 155 km around West Berlin, about 43 km of that through the city, and roughly 3 km survives in fragments — under two per cent. Almost none of it was kept on purpose: the preserved stretches are the ones somebody argued for after the demolition had already taken most of it. Fourteen of the records below are protected monuments, and they include the two surviving command posts, the last panorama watchtower, and the place where the first barrier was raised on 9 November 1989.
