The record

A graffitied fragment, 27 by 42 centimetres, given to the IOC by West Berlin's mayor Walter Momper and held in the Olympic Museum's collection, not on show.

The Olympic Museum's collection catalogue describes object 34747 as a fragment of the Berlin Wall presented to the International Olympic Committee: a stone fragment bearing graffiti, 27 by 42 by 5.5 centimetres and weighing 6.98 kilograms, presented by the mayor of West Berlin, Walter Momper, through Berthold Beitz, an honorary member of the IOC. The catalogue's index, as updated on 23 September 2026, does not mark it as on display. A page of the museum archived in 2016 gives 'a fragment of the Berlin Wall donated by the Mayor of Berlin' as an example of the gifts it keeps because they relate to the IOC's history as an international organisation.

The catalogue does not say when the gift was made or where the fragment is stored; it gives the museum's address on the Quai d'Ouchy for enquiries about the collection.

How did it get here?

Presented to the IOC by Walter Momper, mayor of West Berlin, through Berthold Beitz; the date is not given.
