The record

Two segments given by a former pupil who worked on demolishing the border, set up in the schoolyard in November 1997 and made a memorial with a sculpture in 2012.

The Wall Net's entry records how the pieces came to the school: in November 1997 two segments of the Berlin Wall were set up in the schoolyard of the Gymnasium Grafing as witnesses of contemporary history, a gift of Christian Kilger, a former pupil who after the fall of the Wall had worked for a construction firm on the demolition of the border installations; the school association paid for transporting the pieces, which weigh tonnes.

The local paper reported on 26 November 2012 how they became a memorial. The pieces had arrived some twenty years earlier by a roundabout route and had lain about the schoolyard, and the pupils, born after the Wall fell, knew nothing of their history. Teachers, pupils, parents, historians, architects and artists drew designs, collected material and pictures, wrote texts and argued them over, and with sponsors — the Kreissparkasse, the Raiffeisen-Volksbank and the district office — the wall remains were set in a prominent place with an information board and a sculpture mounted above them showing a group of young people helping one another over the wall to freedom. Pupils marked the unveiling with a short play in which citizens of the GDR tore down a wall of cardboard boxes, and the head, Harald Parigger, said that memorials sharpen historical awareness. The Wall Net puts the completion in 2012 with the help of local firms.

How did it get here?

Given to the school by a former pupil, Christian Kilger, who had taken part in the demolition of the border installations; transported at the school association's expense and set up in November 1997.
