The record

Two original segments unveiled on 8 November 2009 in the park between Berchtesgadener Straße and Unghauser Straße, with a photograph and a short documentation.

The green space between Berchtesgadener Straße and Unghauser Straße in the town centre was laid out for the Bavarian state garden show of 2004 and has carried its present name since 2009, the year of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall. The town's page on the memorial describes what stands there: two original parts of the Berlin Wall, an expressive black-and-white photograph and a short documentation, which it says recall the Cold War, divided families and the people who risked their lives for freedom, and also the day the Wall came down. Its photograph of the pieces is dated 22 May 2012.

The date of the unveiling comes from a private writer's project on Germany's squares of unity. Burghausen had named a small square at the edge of the old town Platz der Deutschen Einheit on 3 October 1990 and planted a lime tree there; in May 2009 the council renamed that square after Wilhelm Hoegner, and after several debates gave the name to this park instead. At the inauguration on 8 November 2009, the eve of the anniversary, the mayor, Hans Steindl, unveiled the two original pieces as a surprise, with the mayor of the Saxon partner town Hohenstein-Ernstthal present. The Wall Net also counts two. Nothing read says where in Berlin the segments stood or how the town acquired them.

How did it get here?
