Two segments collected from elsewhere in Brussels in 2021 and put under glass beside the plenary chamber entrance — conservation rather than display.
Two segments were placed in 2021 in a pair of glass cubes beside the visitor entrance to the European Parliament's plenary chamber. Both had stood elsewhere in Brussels beforehand and were gathered here under a project to protect and preserve them, run jointly by the Belgian state, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Parliament. One of them is the element that came from Potsdamer Platz and spent years in Parc Léopold.
This is the only record in the catalogue where segments have been enclosed expressly to stop them deteriorating. Everywhere else the object stands in the weather as it did in Berlin, and the paint goes the way paint goes. Putting the Wall in a vitrine is a decision about what it has become: not a structure any more but an artefact.
How did it get here?
Assembled in 2021 from other Brussels locations; the Potsdamer Platz element came from Parc Léopold.
