The record
A four-tonne segment brought up the Rhine by a historic Arnhem ship in 2014, first set beside the John Frost Bridge and since early 2016 in a shipyard garden across the river.
A three-metre segment weighing four tonnes was set on the Rijnkade in Arnhem, close to the John Frost Bridge, on 9 November 2014, exactly twenty-five years after the Wall opened. The historic Arnhem ship Ebenhaëzer had brought it from Berlin. The initiator, Jan Trooster, told Omroep Gelderland why the place suited it: the Wall and the bridge at Arnhem are both icons of the consequences of the Second World War. Residents were to be invited over the following year to submit artwork and text about peace in the world, and the two best were to be shown on the wall itself.
It did not stay on the quay. The Stadsblokkenwerf, the shipyard on the south bank, wrote in June 2016 that the segment had stood on the Rijnkade until early 2016 and was now in the yard's own garden on the other side of the river. That is the last report read; whether the yard's garden is open to visitors is not stated.
How did it get here?
One of four elements brought from Berlin in the summer of 2014 for Stichting Muurbrekers; the Arnhem one came on the Ebenhaëzer at the initiative of the Stichting Historische Schepen Arnhem.
