The record
About 500 metres of the Wall, reused after reunification as retaining walls for landfill and bulk material at a recycling firm's yard in the Ruhr.
A photograph by Ralf Rottmann for Imago, published with an article in the Berliner Zeitung on 31 August 2026, is captioned to say that about 500 metres of the Berlin Wall were used after the Wende by BAV Aufbereitung Herne as retaining walls for landfill and bulk material, which the caption calls their original function. The firm gives its address as Hertener Straße 34 in Herne.
The caption is in the past tense and the photograph's date is not given, so this record says that the elements were used here, not that they still are. Nothing read says how many remain, where on the site they stand or whether any can be seen from outside.
