Five segments, ten tonnes, from a builders' yard in Teltow to a park thirty kilometres from the North Korean border — with a model Brandenburg Gate between them.
The mayor of Uijeongbu found the wall elements himself, on a visit to Germany, stacked in a builders' yard at Teltow on the south-western edge of Berlin. Five of them, about ten tonnes in all, went to his city — thirty kilometres from the North Korean border — and were set up in the Uijeongbu Station Neighborhood Park, which is being converted step by step into a peace park.
How they came to be in a builders' yard is the part of this record worth keeping. In the early 1990s the VEB Betonwerke bought wall elements from the National People's Army in order to use them as bins for loose material: the steles that had held a state in were repurposed as the sides of rubble bays. The building materials firm Klösters later took over the 160 elements still standing on the Teltow site, and in 2011 its managing director Elmar Prost started a campaign inviting professional artists and amateurs to paint them. One of the five sent to Korea carries a Thierry Noir.
The symbolic handover to the South Korean consul general Eon-wook Heo took place on 30 September 2013, with Noir, Prost and the mayor of Teltow, Thomas Schmidt, present; the official inauguration followed on 19 March, opened by the mayor of Uijeongbu before some five hundred guests, among them Schmidt, the German actor Bruno Eyron standing in for Thierry Noir, and Tobias Dollase of the Federal Foundation. A replica of the Brandenburg Gate stands between the five segments, with illustrated panels in Korean and English and a film about the Peaceful Revolution.
