The record

A segment that fenced bulk material at Berlin concrete plants and stood in an art project at Teltow until 2014, unveiled at the vocational school's entrance on 6 November 2014.

For the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fall of the Wall the vocational school held a theme week from 3 to 7 November 2014, with the Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung's exhibition „Die Mauer“ in the assembly hall and three talks by Lutz Quester, a political prisoner in the GDR whose release the Federal Republic had bought. Its high point was the inauguration of an original segment of the Wall in front of the main entrance on Thursday 6 November 2014, in the presence of Albert Füracker, state secretary in the Bavarian finance ministry, the district administrator Willibald Gailler, Kurt Walther of the Max Bögl group and the former head Rüdiger Cedl.

The school's own account of the piece's route is unusually precise. The segment was sold by the NVA and the Bundeswehr in 1990/91 and used to enclose bulk material at concrete mixing plants around Berlin; when those plants were dismantled it was set up on the premises of Klösters Baustoffwerke in Teltow, where it was part of an art project until 2014, and it was bought for the school centre with the support of the school's Förderverein, the Kreishandwerkerschaft Neumarkt and the Max Bögl group. The social-studies department wanted the „Denk-mal“ to recall the courage of GDR citizens who kept to their convictions, tried to leave the country at the risk of their lives or joined the demonstrations, and to keep the memory of the victims of the Wall.

The Neumarkter Nachrichten reported the next day that the piece stands to the right of the entrance of the state vocational school on Deininger Weg, and that some pupils thought a witness's talk worth more than a mute stone; the teacher who had organised it, Thomas Trappe, answered that the price had not been high and that the symbol was what counted.

How did it get here?

Sold by the NVA/Bundeswehr in 1990/91 and used at concrete plants around Berlin; set up at Klösters Baustoffwerke in Teltow, part of an art project there until 2014; bought for the school centre with the Förderverein, the Kreishandwerkerschaft Neumarkt and Max Bögl, and inaugurated on 6 November 2014.
