The record
An original piece of the Wall on a former NATO missile site above Scheßlitz, placed by the Schönstatt movement to recall 9 November 1989 and the site's peaceful reuse.
The Marienberg above Dörrnwasserlos, a hamlet of Scheßlitz north-east of Bamberg, was a NATO missile position during the Cold War; the town's page on the centre says it stands on the former NATO rocket base. The Schönstatt movement of the archdiocese of Bamberg now runs it as a meeting place, with a shrine, a chapel, a cross re-erected in 1997, a playground opened in 2012, a way of the cross across the hill and a Sunday flea market. Among the things its own page lists on the grounds is a part of the Berlin Wall, which recalls 9 November 1989, the day on which, as the page puts it, German unity was peacefully given back to the country — the turning point that made the NATO position redundant and its peaceful use possible.
The Wall Net gives the full text of the plaque, which goes on to describe two crossed artillery shells as the swords and lances of our time, recalling the biblical vision of swords beaten into ploughshares, and a plough for the toil of daily work and trust in God. It counts one segment. Nothing read says when the piece was set up or where in Berlin it stood.
How did it get here?
