The record

Two fragments from the Staaken border crossing, given to the town in the early 1990s and made a memorial site in 2010 by the mayors of the two Nienburgs, on the Weser and on the Saale.

The fragments stand on the Berliner Ring, at what the town calls its Erinnerungsort „Berliner Mauer“. The regional tourist board says they came from the border crossing at Berlin-Staaken, were given to the town and were handed over to the public on 8 May 1992. The Wall Net gives the background: in 1991 the commander of the Clausewitz barracks in Nienburg had four segments, kept two on the base and gave the other two to the town.

On 30 May 2010 the place was inaugurated as a memorial by Nienburg/Weser's mayor, Henning Onkes, and Markus Bauer, mayor of Nienburg (Saale) — the town of the same name in Saxony-Anhalt with which it has been twinned for twenty years — to recall the peaceful revolution in the GDR, reunification and the partnership. For the occasion, within a joint project in which pupils from both towns worked through the history, the Belarusian painter Wladimir Wolnow restored the graffiti.

The site is in use. In June 2023 the town's Arbeitskreis Gedenken invited people to a commemoration there of the 1953 uprising in the GDR, and asked them to bring flowers to decorate the wall fragments on the Berliner Ring.

How did it get here?

By The Wall Net's account, two of four segments obtained in 1991 by the commander of the Clausewitz barracks and given to the town; by the tourist board's, from the Berlin-Staaken crossing and handed over on 8 May 1992. Inaugurated as a memorial site on 30 May 2010, with the graffiti restored by Wladimir Wolnow.
