The record

A segment from the border in Berlin-Mitte, found in 2003 at a disbanded barracks in Osterode by veterans of Northeim's old garrison and painted by grammar-school pupils for the town in 2009.

The segment stands on a green beside the Rhumebrücke, at the corner of Seesener Landstraße and Rückingsallee, covered in symbols of peace and freedom. It was unveiled there on 10 November 2009, for the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the Wall.

The town's own account, published for the thirtieth, is that the Kameradenkreis der ehemaligen Garnison Northeim — the association of former members of the town's garrison — under its chairman Claus Bumann found it in 2003 on the grounds of the disbanded barracks in Osterode, brought it to Northeim with the help of sponsors and gave it to the town in 2009. An art class at the Corvinianum grammar school painted the once grey concrete.

The town adds the particulars: reinforced concrete, 3.60 metres high and 1.20 metres wide on a 2-metre foot, 2.7 tonnes, carrying the number 62, from the border area in Berlin-Mitte, and one of 360 elements given away or sold in 1990.

The Wall Net fills in the years between. The Panzergrenadierbataillon 12 at Osterode had obtained two pieces through the Bundeswehr in Berlin; it gave one to the town of Osterode and set the other up in 1991 outside a company at the Rommel-Kaserne, where it stayed when the barracks closed in 2003, until the federal property agency released it to the Kameradenkreis in 2009 on condition that it not be used commercially.

How did it get here?
