Two pieces of the Berlin Wall stand on the orange-tree-lined square in front of the Santuario de Consolación, at the north-western edge of the Andalusian town of Utrera, in the shadow of the church tower. They are badly damaged, and the local tourist office says they are original.
Nothing at the site explains them. There is no plaque, no date, no donor. They have been there since the end of the 1990s and are looked at mainly by people leaving Mass and by the occasional visitor who has found the way.
The record is worth keeping for exactly that reason. Most of this catalogue consists of objects that arrived with a ceremony, a speech and a text panel, and the ones that did not are the harder case: two tonnes of a European border standing unlabelled outside a Spanish sanctuary, with no one left who is saying how they got there.
