The record
Three segments a Jülich building contractor brought home after the Wall fell, shown on the Schlossplatz from 2009 and given a setting beside the town hall, modelled on the Bernauer Straße memorial, in 2019.
Three original segments stand on the Große Rurstraße beside Jülich's Neues Rathaus, at the foot of the Eleonorenbastion and within sight of the council chamber. They were acquired by Heinz August Schüssler, a Jülich building contractor and honorary citizen. The local magazine HERZOG says he bought them in 1989, had them brought to Jülich on a low-loader and kept them on private ground until German Unity Day 2009, when they went up on the Schlossplatz, at the corner of Kölnstraße and Schlossstraße, for the twentieth anniversary of the opening — at first, a council officer told the local paper, as a gift for a limited time that would disappear after a few weeks unless the townspeople wanted to keep it.
They stayed. HERZOG says Schüssler gave the monument to the town in 2010; The Wall Net calls the segments a permanent loan; the town's own announcement says only that he acquired them and handed them over to it. Finding them a better place took years of committee meetings — the bridgehead park, the line of the old B1, the Neusser Platz and the courtyard entrance of the town hall were all considered — before they reached their present site, early in 2015 by The Wall Net's account.
In September 2019 the association of Jülich businesspeople paved the surroundings and added an information panel and concrete blocks as seats, and the site was opened as a Begegnungsstätte, a place of encounter, designed with the support of the Berlin Wall Foundation after the preserved strip at Bernauer Straße. The mayor, Axel Fuchs, said that the history of the Wall and of Germany's division could not simply be wiped away.
This record has no pin: the listing came without coordinates, and no checked coordinate for the site beside the Neues Rathaus was found.
