Spotted in a Berlin company’s yard by a visiting foreign minister in 2019, shipped over in two months, painted through a public competition, and since February 2022 in the Plaza de la Cultura.
A two and a half tonne segment was presented at the Hotel Embajador, in whose garden the Foundation places it. It is among the most recently placed records in the catalogue and it happened quickly: the Dominican foreign minister Miguel Vargas was visiting Germany in February 2019, his delegation called at a Berlin company, someone noticed original segments standing in the yard, and the idea of giving one to the Dominican Republic started there.
After a two-month journey it was presented on 9 November 2019, the thirtieth anniversary, with the foreign minister present. The German embassy and the Dominican foreign ministry then announced an art competition to decide how it should be painted, opened on 10 December 2019 — International Human Rights Day. Most segments in this catalogue arrived already painted, by whoever reached them in Berlin. This one arrived bare and had its surface decided by a public competition thirty years later.
It no longer stands at the hotel. The German embassy’s account, as printed by Diario Libre and Acento in November 2024, says it was first placed at the monument to Fray de Montesinos, where the sea air quickly damaged the printed design, and that in February 2022 it was moved to its definitive place in the Plaza de la Cultura, where it was restored for the thirty-fifth anniversary. The sources do not say when it left the hotel, so the Foundation’s garden and the embassy’s monument are both kept here, and the Hotel Embajador is recorded as the former site.
