The record
Segments on the station forecourt that the Gießen street-art collective 3Steps has used as a canvas since 2015, repainted in 2022 with a message about the war in Ukraine.
In the summer and autumn of 2015 three segments of the Berlin Wall stood on the Bahnhofsplatz in Gießen as the canvas for a temporary installation and performances by 3Steps, a collective of Gießen artists, about the walls between nations, peoples and cultures and in people's heads. The Wall Net, which records them, explains the choice of place: since the Second World War Gießen has been a transit point and destination for refugees, and from the 1960s it was the first stop for people allowed to leave East Germany. The collective's own list of work gives the performance REFLEXION on the Bahnhofsvorplatz in 2015 and a second, The Earth, The Nations, The People, on the Berlin Wall segments there in 2016.
The installation outlasted its season. In March 2022 the Gießener Zeitung reported that 3Steps had repainted the piece of the Berlin Wall on the station forecourt with their message on the war in Ukraine: peace, hope and love for the people of Russia, Ukraine and the whole world. Whether three segments stand there now or one, and who owns them, the sources do not say.
