The record
A piece of the Wall in a village apple park, the last project of the long-serving chairman of the local clubs' association, meant to show the young that Germany was once divided.
The piece stands in the middle of the Apfelpark — the „Stedter Äppelpark“ — in Oberstedten, a district of Oberursel, behind the square the village named after Willi Steffek.
Steffek led the Vereinsring Oberstedten, the umbrella of the village's clubs, until 2017: for fifteen years by the Frankfurter Neue Presse's count, twenty by the Taunus-Nachrichten's. When he stood down, the Frankfurter Neue Presse listed what his committee had done — the roundabout with its fountain at the edge of the village, the Apfelpark, the Christmas lights along the Hauptstraße — and called setting up a piece of the Berlin Wall in the Apfelpark his last project, meant above all to show young people that Germany had once been a divided country. In 2019, when the town gave him its medal of honour, the Taunus-Nachrichten noted that he had had the original piece of the Wall carted to the park himself.
The Wall Net dates its arrival to the autumn of 2014, gives its origin as Potsdamer Platz, and says its graffito was reworked and a map of divided Germany added.
How did it get here?
Brought to Oberstedten on the initiative of Willi Steffek, chairman of the Vereinsring Oberstedten; The Wall Net dates it to autumn 2014 and gives its origin as Potsdamer Platz.
