The record

Segments painted by Alfred Gockel stood in the German embassy's garden from the Wall's twentieth anniversary until about 2015; two of them are now a memorial in Lüdinghausen.

The Arbeitsstelle Gerechtigkeit und Frieden, the Lüdinghausen association that keeps two painted segments on the Ruth-Weiss-Platz there, says on its own page that they stood originally in Athens and were designed by the Lüdinghausen artist Alfred Gockel. The Berlin Wall Archive lists the Athens display as relocated, with three segments.

Where in Athens they stood rests on The Wall Net, whose entry the Archive's listing follows. On the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall, it says, three segments were set up in the garden of the German Embassy before almost a thousand Greek guests, designed by Gockel: Deutsche Einheit, on the two German states as playthings of the superpowers; Soldat Schuhmann, on the East Germans' urge for freedom; and Europäische Vision, on the democratic roots of Europe in Greece. It gives Gockel as its source and says the segments went back to his studio in Lüdinghausen in 2016. Its own Lüdinghausen entry dates the loan differently, from 2010 to 2015, and says the two segments had been bought in 2007 from the stock of Baumedia GmbH in Lünen and that Gockel brought them back when the embassy no longer had room for them; both readings are given here. Two segments make up the Lüdinghausen memorial inaugurated in 2020, which has its own record; what became of a third, if there were three, is not said. No page of the embassy itself about the display was found.

How did it get here?

By The Wall Net's account, two segments from the stock of Baumedia GmbH in Lünen, painted by Alfred Gockel, lent to the German Embassy in Athens and returned to Lüdinghausen, where they have been a memorial since 2020.
