The record

An element from the border at Pankow, bought by the town's cultural society for 2,500 marks and dedicated on the Berliner Platz on 3 October 1992.

The Kulturverein Fritzlar's account of the project begins with Oberstleutnant Hubert Cramer, who after the fall of the Wall supervised the demolition in the border area at Pankow and had a number of elements, 2.70 by 1.30 metres, taken to his home town of Blomberg, where the Lions Club offered them for sale for a good cause. The Kulturverein asked the town for permission to set one up on the Berliner Platz, which was granted; the firm Discher und Popp erected it, so the society had only to raise 2,500 DM to buy it. It was dedicated on the Day of German Unity, 3 October 1992, and the society describes it as completing an ensemble, with a memorial stone to the division of the capital set up in 1968 and the Jewish cemetery, in which recent German history is reflected.

On 8 September 2013, the Day of the Open Monument, a two-panel board was unveiled on the Berliner Platz, by then rebuilt as a roundabout, explaining the milestone ('Berlin 419 km') and the piece of the Wall on one side and the events in Berlin from 1945 to 1989 on the other. Pro Fritzlar, which reported it, says the history society, the Kulturverein and Pro Fritzlar took up the idea and the Magistrat approved it in June that year. Nothing later than 2013 has been read.

How did it get here?

From the border area at Pankow; brought to Blomberg by Oberstleutnant Hubert Cramer, sold by the Lions Club Blomberg and bought by the Kulturverein Fritzlar for 2,500 DM in 1992.
