The record

One of two painted elements that Philipp Scharbert of the Münster agency Lackaffen gave his home town in 2019; the second stands in the von-Galen-Park at Merfeld.

The town's own release, carried by the Coesfeld district news site lookat-online, describes the day the two 2.7-tonne pieces were lifted off a lorry by crane: one onto the Charleville-Mézières-Platz in Dülmen, the other into the von-Galen-Park at Merfeld, five kilometres to the west. The donor is Philipp Scharbert, owner of the design agency Lackaffen, who grew up in Dülmen; he had been able to buy the pieces in 2015 and did not want to give "bare" wall pieces but artworks that carry something positive. At the suggestion of the town's cultural committee he worked out ideas with pupils of the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium and the Merfeld primary school, and his staff painted both elements, with a dove and a peace sign on each in the manner of the graffiti on the Wall's western face. Klaus Ricker, the town's head of education, and the Merfeld village head Helmut Temming received them; information boards and an official ceremony were still to come. The release is undated; a photograph on Wikimedia Commons shows the Charleville-Mézières-Platz piece in place on 19 July 2019, and a second, of December 2020, is geotagged on it.

Lackaffen's own page says simply that pieces of the real Berlin Wall have found their place in Dülmen and Merfeld and that the agency gave the artworks to the towns in 2019. The Wall Net, a general reference, tells the same story with the donor's name misspelt, dates the installation to autumn 2019 and runs the two places together as one.

The Berlin Wall Archive's count of two covers both pieces; this page is pinned on the Dülmen one. Where the elements stood in Berlin is not said by any source read.

How did it get here?

Bought in 2015 by Philipp Scharbert and painted by his agency Lackaffen; given to the town of Dülmen and set up in 2019, one piece here and one in the von-Galen-Park at Merfeld.
