The record

The first Mexican home of fragment 266, bought by the museum's director in 1990 and shown for about ten years. It is now at the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia.

Luis Alonso Sordo Noriega, who directed the Museo de Historia Moderna in Mexico City, bought a section of the Wall in June 1990, catalogued as fragment 266, and had it shipped from Hamburg to Mexico. Milenio says it landed at Veracruz on 31 July 1990. The museum showed it for about a decade, as a reminder of the reunification of two countries and of the political changes in the nations that had been behind the Iron Curtain.

El Universal, reporting in May 2017, places the museum in the old house at Tepic 41 in the Colonia Roma and says it had closed some ten years earlier; the fragment belonged to Sordo, and was offered at the Casa Morton auction on 27 May 2017 at a starting price of 600,000 pesos. The Museo Memoria y Tolerancia bought it and inaugurated it in April 2018 (Milenio). It stands at that museum's entrance, which has its own page in this catalogue.

The two papers differ on the details: June 25 or 26 for the purchase, and 2.7 or 3 tonnes for the weight, so neither figure is used here.

This record has no pin: the listing came without coordinates, and no checked coordinate for the house at Tepic 41 was found.

How did it get here?

Bought in June 1990 by the museum's director, Luis Alonso Sordo Noriega; sold at auction in May 2017 and bought by the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia.
