The record

Bought at a charity auction at the BRAFA art fair in 2020 and unveiled that September at the grid operator's engineering site by the canal, with a former President of the European Council present.

A segment stands in view of the public at the Monnoyer site of Elia, the Belgian transmission system operator: its engineering department by the canal, near the Docks Bruxsel shopping centre, which the press of the day places in Schaerbeek. The Wikipedia list's Boulevard Reyers is not where the reports or the Foundation's pin put it. It was unveiled on 7 September 2020 in the presence of Herman Van Rompuy, the former President of the European Council, and Martin Kotthaus, the German ambassador to Belgium.

Its route here is one the catalogue has not seen elsewhere. It is one of five segments sold at a charity auction at BRAFA, the Brussels art and antiques fair, at the beginning of 2020 — thirty years after the trade of 1990, and a reminder that elements are still changing hands at auction rather than only being given by governments. The press coverage adds the measurements and the money: a piece 3.6 m high and 1.2 m wide, part of the Hinterlandmauer — the inner wall on the East Berlin side of the border strip — bought for about €55,000, all of it to the cancer charity Kom op tegen Kanker. Van Rompuy unveiled it with Elia's chief executive Chris Peeters and read a haiku for the occasion: stones remain, but walls do not last; people bring them down.

How did it get here?
