The record
The Kiddy Citny segment now at The Frontier in Research Triangle Park was first shown in the Exploris children's museum in downtown Raleigh, by its present keeper's account.
Hub RTP, the Research Triangle Foundation's development around the Frontier building in Durham, says of the segment lent to Frontier RTP by Gordon Smith that it was originally displayed in the Exploris Museum, now the Marbles Kids Museum, in Raleigh, before it came to the Frontier's atrium, where it sits today. Bob Geolas, the foundation's chief executive at the time, recalls Smith asking him what to do with the piece as Frontier RTP was opening, and suggesting it as a feature in the lobby. The Frontier's own announcement of 30 April 2015 thanks Smith and calls the piece the first section of the Wall ever sold.
The Wall Net, whose entry the Berlin Wall Archive's listing follows, fills in the Raleigh end. The children's museum had an exhibition area representing regions of the world, and Berlin was represented by the segment, which comes from the Waldemarstraße in Kreuzberg and carries one half of a graffito by Kiddy Citny; the other half was at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York and is missing. Both segments came to New York in 1990 in a promotional campaign for the sale of the Wall in the United States by the East German trading company Limex and its American partner. Nothing read says when the segment went into the museum or when it left. The segment itself has its own record at The Frontier.
