The record

Two segments in an installation by the collector Ludwik Wasecki, handed to the university's institute on 4 June 2014, the 25th anniversary of Poland's first partly free elections.

The Institute of European Culture is the Gniezno branch of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, on the Collegium Europaeum campus on the Kostrzewskiego Street, next to the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State. For 4 June 2014, twenty-five years after the first partly free elections in post-war Poland, it invited the town to a Święto Wolności, a festival of freedom, whose programme its own page sets out: at 9.30 the students' project Ścieżka do wolności in the institute's gallery, from 10.30 a conference on Poles' struggle for freedom and the history of the Berlin Wall, and at 14.00 the handing over by Dr Ludwik Wasecki and the Fundacja Mury of an artistic installation with a fragment of the Wall — by which, the invitation says, Gniezno would join Fátima, Washington and the Vatican as an owner of the symbol of post-war Europe.

The local news site Moje Gniezno described the work the week before: original segments of the Wall, tilted and being bored through by a huge drill, as a symbol of the overthrow of the totalitarian system and the division of Europe, designed and made by Wasecki, a performance artist and collector, and sited by Professor Yoshimi Hashimoto of the sculpture department of the Berlin university. The organisers were the Fundacja Mury, the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the institute and the district authority, with the partner district of Teltow-Fläming among the partners.

The Wall Net, whose entry the Berlin Wall Archive's listing follows, found two segments in front of the institute when it wrote the place up in April 2016, and two is the count both give. No later page from the institute about the installation was found.

How did it get here?

Made by Ludwik Wasecki from original segments and handed over, with the Fundacja Mury, to the institute on 4 June 2014.
