The record
An original piece set up in the village of Riege in 2009 beside the Europaradweg R1 towards Berlin, given by a local businessman.
The municipality's cycling brochure lists the Berliner "Mauer-Denk-Mal" at the old Riege school as a stop on its Mühlen-Tour and, on its tour of places of remembrance, "Mauerstück der Berliner Mauer in Riege": an original piece of the Berlin Wall, set up as a reminder of Germany's division, with a short note on the Wall built in 1961 and opened in 1989. That is the municipality's own word for what stands in the village.
The Paderborn district's tourism office says it has been there since 2009, put up for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall as a symbol of the overcoming of division, and gives the nearest bus stop as Hövelhof-Riege, Spieker. The Wall Net, a general reference, places it in front of an inn on the Europaradweg R1 — the route that runs 3,500 kilometres from Boulogne-sur-Mer through Hövelhof and Berlin to St Petersburg — and says it was given by the local businessman Hartwig Liemke to tell cycling tourists they are on the way to a free Berlin. A photograph on Wikimedia Commons shows the segment in Riege on 9 November 2014.
How did it get here?
Given by the Hövelhof businessman Hartwig Liemke and set up in 2009 for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Wall, by the tourism office's and The Wall Net's accounts.
