Two four-tonne sections in a park rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake, deliberately kept as a living surface that street artists repaint.
Two painted sections, each 3.6 m tall and about four tonnes, stand at the Cashel Street end of Rauora Park — part of the central city rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake. They were gifted in 2017 and installed in 2019, in time for the thirtieth anniversary. The two are recorded as segments 88 and 143: one painted by a group of Berlin students with learning disabilities around 2014, the other with themes from Doctor Who. Christchurch treats them as a living surface rather than a relic — the city council appointed Fiksate Studio & Gallery as curator and custodian to commission street artists to repaint them, which makes this one of the very few sites where the Wall is still being painted.
How did it get here?
Gifted to Christchurch in 2017; installed in Rauora Park in 2019 for the thirtieth anniversary of the opening.
