Three small fragments given by a German ambassador to the building where Bolivia's first free government met — and currently not on show.
Three small fragments are kept at the Casa de la Libertad in Sucre. The building was the Jesuit college where many of the leaders of Latin American independence were educated, and where the first free Bolivian government assembled in July 1825; Bolivia's congress went on meeting in it until 1898. It is now a museum of the independence movement, and the name means House of Freedom.
The record carries a caveat the Foundation itself supplies and the atlas should not smooth over: the fragments are not currently in the exhibition. The museum holds them and has said it is considering showing them again. A visitor going to Sucre to see them today would not.
How did it get here?
Given to the Casa de la Libertad in the early 1990s by Hermann Saumweber, then German ambassador to Bolivia.
